Steve Clarke is creating stunning CGI visuals!

mechLets welcome Steve Clarke to Digitaltreats.com - He's been creating some amazing CGI of some fan favorites like the last star fighter and mecha vs dino's.

Steve tells us about his journey learning visual effects.

When I was younger I was fascinated by sci-fi films and shows like Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica and always wanted to animate my own spaceship sequences. But I wasn't good at modeling in the real world. One day I saw the front cover of a magazine that had a review for Babylon 5. It said the show was about spaceships, but it was animated on a computer. My brother said he'd read about them using Lightwave and looked into how to get it and what I'd need.

Within a few weeks of seeing the magazine, I was able to get hold of version 5.6. and have been crazy about the program ever since. I have tried other programs but Lightwave and Newtek seemed to think the way I do and set things up the way I would if I had my own program, so I've stuck with it and always will consider it my number one choice.

I started using it for illustration work and got into product work. It didn't take long before I hated working in advertising. I was talking to my brother on a Sunday, saying I wasn't happy with my job. Asylum's Megashark vs Octopus was on the TV and as daft as it was, I said to my brother at least they are having fun. How can they not? So he suggested I write to them as I had nothing to lose.

I wrote to the company and I had a reply from Joseph Lawson (who had seen my work on the Lightwave forums) and he said I could start right away. I stayed at Asylum for over ten years and during that time I met some amazing people on some wild shows. On an outside project, I met Paul Knott, who had written his own short film. He hated his job too so I suggested he work at the Asylum as a modeler. We worked well together so we teamed up and during a strange period at the Asylum we left to work on other films for other companies.

Since then we have continued to meet great people and now have a list of TV movies and teams we have been a part of. During my free time I play with animations I don't get to explore at work. Recently it's been cars as I've never had a reason to work with them before. Great fun and something I'd like to try in an actual movie.
